    The Best Tooth Friendly Recipes for the Festive Season

    The festive season is upon us, so now’s the time to get inspired by Australian festive foods. If they’re good for you too, well that’s just a bonus!

    Here are some tooth-friendly recipes great for the summer festive season, while still keeping your Augustine Heights dentist happy.

     

    Brie and strawberry skewers and a fruit salad

    Cheese is a good source of calcium. Essential for optimum dental health, cheese neutralises plaque acid and increases saliva production. Strawberries can lift minor stains on the teeth, as well.

    Together, not only are they tooth decay fighters, but decadent and irresistible.

    What you’ll need:

    • Whole strawberries (washed and the top cut off)
    • One small brie wheel

    Cut the brie into small cubes and gently bake in the oven for 5 minutes. Remove, place strawberries on top of the cubes and skewer. Bon Appetit!

    Delightfully creamy with a touch of sweetness, brie and strawberry skewers are a lovely appetiser for festive entertaining.

    For a fruit salad, think of crunchy and firm fruits. Fruits like apples and pears encourage saliva production which helps neutralise bacteria and protect against tooth decay.

    What you’ll need:

    • 3 chopped apples
    • 3 chopped pears
    • 2/3 cup of toasted walnuts
    • 1/4 cup of honey
    • 1/4 cup of fresh mint leaves

    Toss together for a breath-fresher and an easy summer dessert classic.

    Macadamia-coated barramundi

    Lean fish is protein-rich and unlikely to get stuck between your teeth. The deliciously crunchy macadamia coating can help remove early-plaque from your teeth.

    What you’ll need:

    • 2 halved fillets of barramundi
    • 1 cup of macadamia nuts
    • 1/2 loaf of crusty bread
    • 1 handful of parsley
    • 1/3 cup of orange juice
    • 1/3 cup of melted butter
    • Orange zest

    Blend the bread and orange zest in a food processor until crumbly. Add the macadamias and parsley until crushed, but still crunchy. Finally, add the melted butter and orange juice and mix until blended.

    Coat the fish with the macadamia mixture and bake at 180 degrees Celsius for 20-25 minutes. Serve with a side salad.

    This recipe is a great Australian festive meal, which also happens to be kind to your teeth.

    Roast potato salad with greens

    Leafy green vegetables have higher calcium levels than a glass of milk. So, there’s no denying that eating your greens is good for your overall health, including dental health.

    What you’ll need:

    • 1kg of thinly chopped potatoes
    • 200g of thinly sliced snow peas
    • 200g of washed kale
    •  2 thinly sliced red onions
    • 1/2 cup of finely chopped parsley
    • 25g melted butter

    Place potatoes in a saucepan with water. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes or until tender.

    Drain the potatoes and place in a large baking dish with the onion. Combine the butter and oil together and coat the potatoes and onion in the mixture, then bake at 220 degrees Celsius. Roast for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the potatoes are nice and crispy.

    Remove from the oven and toss the kale through. Garnish with snow peas and parsley.
